This is defined by the energy factor (EF), which is based on tests of effciency using 65 gallons a day. The most efficient gas water heaters have energy factors in the range of .60 to .65. The most efficient electric water heaters have energy factors in the range of .9 to .95. The higher the energy factor the more efficient the water heater is and the more money you will save on utilities. Be sure to investigate if your state provides incentives for using a more efficient water heater and you can experience a lifelong process of saving money.
To ensure piece of mind choose the longest warranty available, especially if you have a water softening system. Water softening systems will speed up the anode corrosion and will cause water heaters to fail sooner.
